UTC ThinkAchieve Events
Fall 2015
Native American Luncheon
Event: Professor Honerkamp presented on the history of Chattanooga. He discussed the Native American populations that were forced out of this area and their impact on the Area.
Questions: What groups lived specifically in Chattanooga? When ever they forced out of Chattanooga?
Usefulness: This presentation was important because in school history is not always taught truthfully. I was important to here some of the truth.
Spring 2016
Poetry Night
Event: Spoken words artist G Yamazawa used his craft to discuss his culture and life as an Asian American.
Questions:How do you integrate the two different cultures into your everyday life?
Movie Night with LH Mason singer: Freedom Riders
Event: The LH mason singer hosted a Black History month movie night in the MCC. The movie was Freedom Riders, which was about a teacher showing student who no one else cared about that she cared.
Questions: Are there really professional in the school systems telling students that they won’t be anything? If so why are you a teacher? Why ruin someone confidence like that?
Usefulness: Growing up I always had a lot of support, as I got older and met people from different backgrounds. They would always say they are working hard to prove someone wrong, and that they can be a success. This movie shined a light on someone I had never personally experienced.
Black History Month Scavenger Hunt
Event: The Multicultural Mentorship put together a Martin Luther King Jr. Scavenger Hunt and partner with several different departments in the University center. We had to go around and learn about the department and they would give us a clue towards answering the question for the scavenger hunt.
What is Privilege?
Event: What is Privilege was a group discussion on Privilege. People talked about what Privilege is to them and what it looks like.
Questions: How does Privilege effect me? How is privilege used in everyday life? How is my privilege different from others?
Usefulness: This topic is something that needs to be discussed more and in larger groups. As an African American Woman my privilege is completely different from that of a white male. Growing up in the suburbs my privilege is different from a person who grow up in poverty struck areas.
Caving
Event: Caving was the first Outdoors event that I went to with UTC. I loves outdoors and sports but I never thought of caving. My friend and I signed up to go and it was an amazing experience. We took a trip with UTC outdoors to Howards Cave in Georgia, it was so beautiful. Seeing how rocks had formed and how the water created the areas to walk through, it was an experience I will never forget.
Fall 2016
Getting Naked
Event: Harlen Cohen an award winning author came to UTC to discuss about dating, making friends, and building relationships while in college.
Questions: What experiences help you write your book?
Usefulness: This event helped make realize things happened while in college. It is important to understand why it happened so next something similar happens you know how to handle it.
